Counselling Aboriginal Clients Affected by Cancer
Incorporate Your Awareness of Aboriginal Issues into your Counselling Practice
16th -18th August 2013-10-13
Jemby- Rinjah Eco Lodge, Blackheath,NSW
All current research indicates that cancer is a major cause of disease and death in Aboriginal communities and the Cancer Council of NSW is committed to the Reconciliation Action Plan which seeks to address the inadequacies of access to information, counselling and health services for Aboriginal communities. An integral part of this commitment is that all Cancer Council NSW staff are required to undertake Cultural Awareness training. In keeping with our successful partnership with CCNSW since our inception, the Board feels that it is essential we include ourselves in this vision and develop our skills in offering counselling to Aboriginal clients by increasing our own awareness of health related issues for these communities.
Over the course of the weekend we have some interesting and provocative speakers who will stimulate your interest and, we are sure, will generate much discussion. On Saturday we will be having guest speakers from the Blue Mountains Aboriginal Culture and Resource Centre who will take us on a cultural awareness journey focusing on the impact of health issues for women and men. On Sunday, are delighted to advise that Dr. Anthony Dillon, lecturer at the University of Western Sydney and a Psychologist with the Centre for Positive Psychology and Education, UWS, who is also from the Aboriginal community, will facilitate a workshop on Counselling Aboriginal Clients.
